Andy Kaufmann

Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman (New York January 17 1949 - Los Angeles May 16 1984), better known as Andy, was an American comedian . Actually Andy himself hated the definition of "comic" that was alleged, calling himself "song and dance man" (translated more or less as a singer and dancer, although the translation into Italian does not make the idea the correct shade, closer to showman), and repeating that he never told a joke in his life.

Kaufman died May 16, 1984 for lung cancer, and was buried at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, New York (Long Island).
Many people doubted Kaufman's death for years, believing his death as his last and final joke. The suspicion arose also because of the cause of death of Kaufman: lung cancer is very rare in a non-smoker and in people under the age of 50. Kaufman himself, on one occasion said that sooner or later he staged his death, to return 20 years later (May 16, 2004), creating a real urban legend.

Life of Andy Kaufmann is synthesized in the wonderful film by Jim Carrey: The men on the moon.
